A patio is like an extra room of your house, serving as an outdoor living room, dining room, kitchen, and playroom. If you live in a townhouse, it may even serve as your “yard”! And just like any other part of your home, you’ll want to make the patio comfortable, beautiful, and functional. I’ve compiled the following list of patio garden ideas to help you turn the blank canvas of your patio into an outdoor living space full of the plants you love.

1. Pick a Theme

First, take some time to daydream. What does your dream patio look like? As you envision the perfect patio garden, keep in mind your personal tastes as well as the local climate and the growing conditions (amount of shade, type of soil, rainfall, etc.) surrounding your patio. Here are a few sample themes to get you started:

  • tropical
  • wildflower
  • herb
  • rose
  • rock/xeriscape
  • woodland

2. Choose a Shape

Once you’ve chosen a theme for your patio garden, consider its shape. The most common are squares or circles. You can go for the elegance of crisp, clean lines and sharp angles (like a rectangle with a pergola) or opt for a more rounded, organic appearance.

Consider the shape of your existing patio (if you have one), but note that you can incorporate curvy shapes even with a square patio and vice versa! It will depend on the furniture, type of materials, and how it plays with the yard’s shape.

3. Grow a Privacy Hedge

If you live in town, you may want some sort of a privacy screen enclosing your patio. A hedge can both block out the surrounding chaos and add lovely greenery to your outdoor space.

Even if you live in a rural area, bordering your patio with a hedge will help it feel more like a cozy room. Those who lack in-ground planting space can grow small trees or shrubs in large, rectangular containers. Depending on your theme, metal livestock troughs work great for this!

4. Soften Edges with Spillers and Creepers

Use plants that spill and creep to soften hard edges around your patio. Place spillers where they can tumble over walls or containers, such as the large boxes holding your privacy hedge (see above).

Fill low-trafficked spaces between pavers and stones with creeping plants, like creeping thyme, to reduce weeds and create a lived-in cottage feel.

5. Think Vertical

Green live plants in round pots are suspended on the veranda of the summer cafe as an interior decoration. Details of the design of public places. The use of plants for the decoration of the room.

We often look at the ground when considering plant placement, but remember that you can utilize vertical growing space, too! Hang potted plants at various heights (ferns and other “spillers” are great for this) and incorporate a few potted trees.

Another benefit of the latter is that you can grow warm-climate trees like lemons even in cooler regions and bring them inside to overwinter. Living walls are also fun: grow vines up a trellis or fence, hang flat-backed planters on a wall, or create a vertical gardening space using an upright wooden pallet filled with soil.

6. Install a Shady Pergola

If your patio lacks shade, you can install an awning or umbrella or opt for a pergola. In addition to providing cool, dappled shade, a pergola really increases your vertical growing space by allowing you to utilize even the area directly above the patio.

More plants? Yes, please! Grow grapevines on top with climbing roses twining up the sides or plant some romantic wisteria dripping with airy blossoms.

7. Plant in Raised Beds

Raised beds are an excellent way to add more growing space to your patio. A raised bed garden can allow you to keep fresh culinary herbs close to the kitchen or grow vegetables even if your “yard” looks more like a concrete slab.

Raised beds also work well for flowers and enable you to keep contained plants that spread a little too eagerly. Plus, they keep your plants at an easily accessible height, reducing the need to bend and kneel.

8. Furniture Can Add a Nice Touch

No patio is complete without thoughtful furniture! Add a table for dining, or simply arrange a few comfortable chairs and benches for relaxing in your patio garden. If you’re feeling creative, you can even make your own furniture.

Wooden pallets are a popular medium for DIY furniture, but you can also turn tree stumps into stools or stack cinderblocks into a range of shapes. You can even use the armrests of a cinderblock bench as planters and the holes in the front of the seat for storage.

Or, you can add a round or oval-shaped chair adorned with pillows and blankets for a cozy night on the patio.

9. Add Some Soothing Sound

The fountain in the garden of the mountain village

I find trickling water to be very calming, which can be especially important in urban areas where noise abounds. If you have the space, you might opt for a waterfall cascading into a fish pond (think aquatic plants!).

In smaller spaces, a fountain can be just as soothing, whether free-standing or installed on a wall. I also love the sound of wind bells, and there are so many options with varying materials and sizes for a wide range of sounds.

Your lackluster patio might not look like much now, but you can transform it into an inviting outdoor living space with some creative thinking and, of course, a few well-placed plants. I hope these patio garden ideas have provided you with the inspiration you need to get started!

Getting outdoors is good for the soul, and you don’t even have to go far to do it. If you have a patio, you can create the perfect space to entertain, relax, or simply escape.

But setting up the perfect space means putting a little time and attention in. After all, it’s to be your space, so why not make it as perfect as it can be?

If you’re not sure where to get started, we’ve got you covered with some ideas.

Plan Around a Focal Point

Before you start overloading your patio with all the fixings, take a moment to create a design plan. There should always be a focal point because that will help you create a cohesive space.

This could be a single element like a fire pit or an outdoor fireplace. You can also set up a cozy furniture setup and use that as the focal point. Once you have that established, you can build around it.

Choose Comfortable Seating

Since you’re creating a space designed especially for entertaining and relaxation, it makes sense that your furniture should be comfortable. Think cushions and pillows that soften up harsher materials. It goes without saying they should be weather-resistant as well.

In addition to being comfortable, if you have a small space, using multifunctional furniture, like a coffee table that doubles as storage, can help make the most of your patio.

Add Natural Elements

One of the reasons people enjoy being outside is because they commune with nature. If your patio is mostly concrete, you can add greenery and plants to your space easily.

Hanging planters with cascading flowers add a pop of color and elegance to the space, or you could use container planters around the border of your patio with various plants to brighten it up.

Opt for Mood Lighting

Mood lighting is a great way to add ambiance to your patio. If you have a lighting element with multiple options, you could adjust it for the occasion, to add versatility and keep costs low.

For example, use dim lights for a romantic date outside and more ambient lighting for parties and get-togethers with friends and family.

Make Sure You Have Shade

Large gray pergola on pavers with stone fireplace and waterfall urns for backyard oasis landscape design

Unless you only plan to use your patio after the sun sets, you’ll want to have some type of shade element. Most of the time, a large patio umbrella will give you enough coverage.

If you want to kick up the design, think of adding a pergola or a trellis that can provide some cover. You’ll need to have the space for this, of course, and in some areas, you might even need a permit to add the permanent structure.

Put Your Personality on Display

This is your space, and it should definitely reflect your tastes and personality. If you’re a bright, energetic person, bold colors may suit your patio design more than neutral or pastel.

If you’re afraid of exhibiting too much in terms of colors and patterns, pick an accent piece, such as a patterned rug, to tie it all together. The main point is when people enter your space, it reflects you.

Use Vertical Space

Using vertical space can make your patio look so much more complete. Imagine, for example, growing a mini garden outside and using a fence or privacy screen as a place to culture vegetables or herbs.

You can also use the vertical space for decor. Do you have a favorite design scheme you love? Paint a wall with it or find outdoor artwork to hang up. You could even hang a weather-resistant rug to achieve the desired effect. Let your imagination run wild.

Install Privacy Screens

There’s nothing worse than sitting outside and seeing your neighbors peeking over, whether you’re in full view or they are channeling Wilson from “Home Improvement.”

The good news is privacy screens will afford you the opportunity to stay out of view of people around you. You could buy paneling specifically for outdoors or even a bamboo screen to keep your space in tune with nature.

Add Warmth in Cold Weather

If you live in an area that has cold spells, that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the outdoors. Just add some heat elements, such as a heat lamp or outdoor heater.

You can also add a firepit or fireplace, as previously mentioned, and store some blankets in a cabinet or bench outside for easy access.

Set Up a Mini Kitchen

If you plan to be outside on your patio often, storing some snacks and drinks nearby would save you from having to make a trip back inside.

If you can’t build a full-on outdoor kitchen, consider adding a mini refrigerator or cabinet to your outdoor space. If you have the room, a grill or smoker always fits in well, especially if you entertain quite a bit.

More and more homeowners are building backyard retreats where they can put up their feet and relax, or gather with a few friends around a real flame in a warming outdoor space. According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, fire pits have become the most popular landscape design element in the United States.

A wood burning fire pit is a great addition to any outdoor space.  It only costs a few hundred dollars to get one and add to the ambiance of your outdoor living area. But future owners of wood burning fire pits need to be aware of their do’s and don’ts.

wood burning fire pit

Do’s and Don’ts for Operating a Wood Burning Fire Pit

DO keep your fire pit, whether it is wood burning or natural gas burning, safely away from your home and any wood or composite decks or gazebos. Fire pits should be operated no less than 10 to 20 feet away from a house or any other structure, like a detached garage or garden shed. The farther away from your house or outbuildings you place your fire pit, the safer it will be.

DON’T place your fire pit near shrubs or under trees. It isn’t enough to keep fire pits at a safe distance from your house or other structures. You must also keep flames, ash, and embers away from low-hanging branches, tall grasses, or bushes that catch fire easily.

DO check your weather forecast before you start a fire. High winds increase the risk of embers blowing around and landing on your roof, on an outbuilding, or on dry vegetation. If your weather forecast calls for gusty winds, save fire lighting for another night. Your weather forecast may also advise you on outdoor fire bans that can (but don’t always) include fire pits.

DON’T leave your fire burning overnight. Leaving a burning fire unattended is dangerous and illegal. Don’t just let the fire burn down overnight. Always stop adding wood about an hour before you intend to go inside, and always put out the fire with water, sand, or ashes before you leave the area. Stir the ashes to make sure there are no hot spots that could reignite the fire or spread the fire to your surroundings. if there are hot ashes remaining, put out the fire again.

DO clean out leaves, twigs, limbs, and other seasonal debris that may accumulate in your fire pit. Don’t make a plan just to burn it in a wood fire later. The problem with burning leaves and other small bits of plant matter that may blow into your fire pit is that they can easily escape your fire pit while they are burning. Embers from leaves and plant debris from your fire pit pose the same danger to your home as a wildfire.

DON’T operate your fire pit near any kind of flammable material. It’s especially important to store firewood and kindling a safe distance (at least 20 feet) away from your fire pit. You also need to make sure lawn mowers, gasoline-powered saws and trimmers, and flammable plastics are a safe distance away from your fire pit before you start a fire.

How to Choose the Best Wood Burning Fire Pit

What are the best wood burning fire pits?

Choosing the best fire pit for your patio or backyard is a matter of deciding how you plan to use it. You may want to use your fire pit for barbecuing, or you may just want to sit around the fire with family and friends. If these are your plans for your fire pit, the basic requirements are just a wire mesh spark screen and a fire poker. You may also want a grill grate. Everything else is a matter of what fits with your patio design and budget.

If you are planning to move your fire pit between your patio and your lawn, you need to make sure it is relatively lightweight. You may also want a truly portable fire pit you can take on camping trips and weekends at the lake.

A wood burning fire pit is less expensive than a propane fire pit. The best wood burning fire pits come at price points from $50 to $400. Below are some examples.

FAQs about wood burning fire pits

Can a fire pit be both gas and wood burning?

No, burning wood in a gas fire pit generates too much heat. Wood generates much more heat than a typical gas flame. Burning wood in a gas fire pit can damage the fire pit and even start a fire in your home.

Is a fire pit considered an open flame?

Fire pits generate open flames as you start burning wood. However, any covered fire pit or ground fire pit is less likely to come in contact with materials that can cause wildfires. Many cities and counties specifically exclude fire pits that are set in the ground or otherwise covered from burn ban orders. Check with local authorities for local rules.

Do wood burning fire pits give off heat?

Wood burning fire pits don’t just give off heat, they give off more heat than gas burning fire pits. However, they are harder to start, and they generate more smoke and fumes.

Should you put sand in the bottom of a fire pit?

Sand soaks up heat and radiates it evenly even after embers have died out. It protects the metal bowl of your fire pit from the intense heat burning wood can put out. However, putting sand in the bottom of your fire pit makes cleaning more of a chore, unless you are willing to replace the sand every time you clean out the ashes.

What fire pit gives off the most heat?

Wood burning fire pits give off the most heat. Dense woods like oak and hickory burn hotter than lighter kindling. The heavier your fire pit, the longer it will radiate heat after the fire burns down.

Can you put a fire pit on a deck?

NEVER place a fire pit of any kind on a wooden or composite deck! The least that can happen is that heat from your fire pit will scorch and disfigure your deck. Repeated use can weaken composite decks. There is also the risk of setting your deck and your house on fire. Stone, concrete, or brick patios are safest.

What do you put in the bottom of a wood-burning fire pit?

Many people start with a layer of sand at the bottom of their wood-burning fire pit, and then add lava rocks, paving stones, fire pit glass, or bricks to protect the base and to radiate heat. (It’s possible to use dirt, but cleaning will be messy.) Keep in mind that you have to remove ashes when you choose where to put the protective layers in the bottom of your fire pit.

What can I put around a fire pit?

Brick, stucco, flagstone, and poured concrete are good options for creating an attractive fire barrier around your fire pit. Flagstones can be laid free-form on the ground without mortar for a rustic look, or they can be cemented together to keep them from slipping.

How do I clean a fire pit?

Remove ash and the materials you have used to protect the bottom of the pit (bricks, sand, dirt, lava rocks, and so on). Wash the pit with a soft cloth and warm, soapy water. Then wipe it dry with a dry cloth. To avoid rusting don’t let water stand in your fire pit.

Can you leave a fire pit burning?

Anywhere you live in the United States, there are laws against leaving a recreational fire burning unattended. Even if your fire has gone out, hot ashes and embers can be caught by the wind and start fires somewhere else. And even when your fire seems to have gone out, a gust of wind can reoxygenate the fire so it starts again.

Can I burn ‘any’ wood in a fire pit?

Wood that has been stained, painted, or pressure-treated will burn like any other wood, but it burns faster (so you use more wood) and it leaves a potentially toxic residue on your fire pit. Woods that contain natural creosote, or wood that has been treated with creosote (like railroad ties) will give off toxic fumes. Dry, cure, dense wood is always your best choice for the longest-lasting, most fuel-efficient fire.

Does a fire pit table give off heat?

Any gas-heated fire pit table will generate less heat than a wood burning fire pit.

Can I buy a stone fire pit online?

You can find cast stone fire pits online and in stores. They usually cost $500 and up.

Do you need gas lines for gas fire pits?

Gas fire pits require a permanent hook up into your natural gas system, whether you get gas from your municipal utility or you live in a rural area and rely on a gas tank. Professional installation of gas lines is recommended.

Are there any smokeless fire pits?

Yes. Those are gas fire pits. They are cleaner than wood burning fire pits but lack the beauty and aroma of a natural wood fire.

Are there any important differences between a cast iron fire pit and a stainless steel fire pit?

In theory, stainless steel will last longer, but cast iron can become an heirloom if it is repainted every few years. Otherwise, the main difference is which metal looks better with your patio design. Stainless steel has a more modern look, but cast iron offsets the look of copper.

Can I operate a fire pit without a heat shield?

Yes! Just sit a little farther back from the fire. You only need a mesh grate to catch ash and embers to eliminate a fire hazard.

If you’re looking for the best fire pit table to have in your outdoor space, you’re going to enjoy these affordable, functional, and usable options. There are few things better in life than being able to sit out in your backyard around a glowing and warm fire pit. Add some simple, but needed ambiance to your outdoor area with a beautiful fire pit.

Outdoor fire pit table

What is a fire pit table?

A fire pit table is just as it sounds. It’s typically a tabletop space or area that has a fire pit in the middle of it. It’s used for fun, cooking, or just adding a sense of uniqueness to your home.

What to burn on the firepit table?

That’s really up to you. Some fire pits actually come with a premade insert that you just can light and let burn time and time again. Others are made with the option to add things into it to burn. This could be chopped wood or even charcoal. Then that fire pit can suddenly turn into an outdoor cooking option, too.

Can you put a fire pit table on a deck?

You can, but it’s not recommended. The reason for this is that the fire pit has the potential to get hot. This means that you’re going to be putting something hot on wood and that is just calling for a recipe for disaster.

Plus, if you’re lighting a fire in your fire pit, there’s a chance of sparks or embers flying through the air as well. The best way to use a fire pit is to have it in the yard or on concrete.

I love a simple display of pumpkins and chrysanthemums, but you may like more elaborate arrangements. Here are a few favorite front porch fall decorating ideas

Front Porch Fall Decorating Ideas

Start at your front door

Fall wreath hanging on the front door

An autumn wreath hanging on the front door traditionally represents the season and always looks charming.

You can buy a ready-made wreath or make your own using a combination of materials such as grapevines, bittersweet, leaves, flowers, nuts, pine cones and gourds, finished off with an elegant bow. Colored corn also looks festive hanging on a front door.

Paint your front door

Wreaths are great for a quick front door decor change. But what if you’d like a bigger change? Paint your front door a fall color. It might be a bit more expensive and a couple hours of work, but WOW! You’ll absolutely love the difference. Look at this bright orange front door: it screams fall!

Pumpkins

Nothing is more traditional for autumn decor than pumpkins. Arrange a display of pumpkins, different sizes and shapes. You can leave them au naturel, paint faces on them or carve them for lighting up after dark.

Some pumpkins in a large basket, a pile of pumpkins in the corner, some pumpkins resting in a chair or atop a stool – all will look great and give your front porch a very festive touch of autumn and Halloween.

Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums add the perfect decorating touch to any front porch – simple yet elegant and bursting with beautiful autumn colors. Great for curb appeal too.

I have lots of chrysanthemums planted by my front door. We bought several to decorate one year and just planted them. We enjoy them every year now! no extra work, and no extra cost. Here’s a quick look at least year’s blooms!

Are your chrysanthemums fading after a beautiful fall color? Here’s how to trim mums to keep them healthy.

Props

Props come in handy for enhancing your autumn decorating. Old wood boxes, baskets, crocks, wagons, carts, wheelbarrows, weathered barn doors, sections of fence, wooden wagon wheels, cast iron cauldrons, rustic tables, rocking chairs – all work great as background props and containers for displaying pumpkins, gourds and chrysanthemums or as freestanding decorations by themselves.

  • Cornstalks make great decorator props, adding some height and an easy-to-work-with neutral color. They make the perfect background when featuring decorative pieces from pumpkins and gourds to witches and scarecrows. They fit nicely into corners, an added bonus when porch space is limited.
  • Hay bales make great props also, again a neutral color and an ideal place for setting up your autumn décor or propping up a stuffed straw man.

Use available space

If you have a large front porch you can create an elaborate autumn display complete with wagons and carts, even a haunted house theme if you want.

Small porch? You can still do some great decorating. Use available corners for leaning tall decorations such as cornstalks, witches and goblins. Scatter some pumpkins, gourds and leaves at the base. Drape a spider-filled web nearby. Also take advantage of the front steps to create a lovely display of colorful pumpkins and chrysanthemums.

A pop-up gazebo can come in handy many times. Graduations, weddings, and outdoor BBQ parties are good reasons to have a portable gazebo for the backyard to celebrate, regardless of the weather. Of course, so is going camping or to the beach. Pop-up gazebos are made of lightweight materials and offer shelter from the elements (rain or sun). They allow you to make memories with friends and family.

1. Graduations

Graduations are special. But rain sometimes happens! An enclosed pop-up gazebo is a great way to protect photos and other items of the graduate on display.

You can also put all the food inside the gazebo to help protect it from flies and other bugs.

2. Weddings

Because there are so many varieties and styles of pop-up gazebos, you’ll be able to find one that’s just right for your wedding.

Whether you want to use it for your ceremony or place the wedding cake under a canopy-style pop-up gazebo for added protection, there are many ways you can decorate it specifically for the theme and style of your wedding.

3. Backyard BBQ

Don’t let the rain keep you from enjoying a delicious meal cooked on the grill. Having a pop-up canopy in your backyard can serve many purposes: from protecting your food to providing shade for you and your guests.

4. Lawn/Deck/Patio Decor

A canopy-style gazebo will enhance and add style to any lawn, deck, or patio. Place your picnic table underneath for shade while eating or just hanging out.

5. Play area for small children

Set up toys, a playpen, or a small plastic swimming pool in an enclosed gazebo to help protect small children from the sun during the hot summer months.

6. Getaway

A canopy-style gazebo or an enclosed pop-up can provide a nice little getaway right in your own backyard where you can escape with a good book or just your daydreams.

Take your gardening books and make plans for your garden. Add an outdoor sofa and a small wicker table, and you’ve got yourself a dream spot for the summer.

7. Beach

Because pop-up gazebos are portable and easy to set up, they’re great for taking to the beach. They’ll provide shade when you need to get out of the sun and are a great play place in the sand for kids.

As you can see, there are many, many uses for a pop-up gazebo. Not only will they enhance the look of your lawn, patio, or deck, but they will also provide protection from the sun, bugs, and weather. Pop-up gazebos are sturdy and waterproof and will withstand the test of time. You’ll enjoy your pop-up gazebo for years to come.
